History: Wikia
Personality:
N.B. Though this covers much of her development during Insurgent, it should be noted that Tris is being taken from the end of the first book, so she has yet to deal with the aftermath of losing her parents, having to kill Will or reaching the point where she wants to live. She is suffering from PTSD and this will be something she needs to work through upon arrival in Teleios as she would enter straight after the events that led to it. I've included development after her canon point to show how she dealt with it in canon. To understand Tris, is to understand the setting in which she lives. In Veronica Roth's Dystopian vision of Chicago, society has been broken into factions in an attempt to rebuild after a great war has torn the world apart. Each faction is built on a belief system that tries to combat the very things they believe caused the destruction of society. Abnegation values selflessness, Dauntless values bravery, Erudite values knowledge, Amity values peace, whereas Candor values honesty.
At the age of sixteen, every person who lives in Chicago takes an aptitude test where they enter a simulation that leads them to the faction that best suits them. Most test results will show a clear path to the person who takes it and when they take the choosing ceremony, they often choose the faction they have been raised in. In some rare cases, transfers will occur, where a person will move from the faction of their family to another faction, thus leaving their families behind them. In the rarest of situations however, the test will be inconclusive, a person showing an inclination to more than one faction. This is known as Divergence.
Tris Prior, is Divergent.
Raised in Abnegation, Tris never felt as though she truly belonged there. She never considered herself to be selfless enough, even saying she was not "good enough" to remain in this faction. Her upbringing has however had a great impact on the person she is. She is far from vain, having rarely seen her reflection in a mirror and though she is always neat, she tends to dress down for all occasions, preferring to draw little attention to herself.
It is hard for her to come out of her shell at times and finds public displays of affection to be embarrassing, if not scandalous. It goes against her nature to have physical contact with others, be it hugs (as the people of Amity do) or even handshakes (as is the normal greeting in Dauntless.) Those in Abnegation did not believe in such things, which is perhaps why they have been dubbed "Stiffs" by the other factions.
Where she differs greatly from those of the faction she was raised, is her curiosity (a trait that is attributed to the Erudite) and most notably her bravery, the latter of which led her to transferring to Dauntless when it came time for her to choose.
It is when she transfers to Dauntless that the real Tris begins to emerge. No longer constrained by the values of Abnegation, we see a young woman who will rise to every challenge that is thrown at her, being the first jumper upon her arrival at the Dauntless compound, all because somebody suggests she's too much of a Stiff to belong there. She also shows here that she has the ability to reason out a problem rather than jump in blindly. It is this ability to be able to objectively look at a situation that enables her to be as brave as she is. Rather unlike her now fellow Dauntless, she does not often run blindly into danger. She can quietly weigh up the situation and make a decision based on that.
She has been accused of being somebody who will act first, think second and though this may appear to be true at times, the people that make these accusations do not understand the way a Divergent's mind works. Tris is always thinking, trusting her gut reaction most of the time but she does have the ability to logically work through a problem in order to gain the best result, as we see through Insurgent when she is able to predict the way that the Erudite faction will act.
She hates to show weakness, especially to her enemies though she has learned that sometimes in order to survive, it is best to make yourself appear a certain way in order to be protected, as she is forced to do after she was attacked and almost killed during her initiation. Most of the time however, Tris would rather pretend to be fearless than allow her opponent any satisfaction, as we see when she is captured by The Erudite in Insurgent. It is this bravery in the face of seeming hopelessness that suggests she truly does belong to Dauntless.
Tris finds forgiveness hard to come by, both when it comes to those who sin against her (when she refuses to forgive Al for his involvement in her initiation assault), and when it comes to the sins she herself commits. Despite the circumstances that surround the death of Will, being forced to kill him in order to survive is something that haunts her so greatly, she still has difficulty holding a gun let alone firing one. She blames herself for the sacrifice her parents made in order for her to live, almost as much, if not more than she blames Jeanine, leader of Erudite, who was responsible for the attacks that led to their deaths.
She believes in revenge, yet manages not to be bloodthirsty like many of her fellow Dauntless. Above all else, it appears that Tris not only wants to find the truth, but she wants to live her life in a way that honors her family and the many who have fallen since the fighting broke out. She will choose understanding and honor over murdering the woman deemed responsible for the slaughter of innocents as we see towards the end of Insurgent.
She has been shown to be at times reckless, though this is arguably not a trait that has always been with her, but instead something that emerged as a result of the events that occurred at the end of Divergent. Tris showed a carelessness for her own life, making decisions based less on reason and more on blind instinct. Four (Tobias) accuses her of changing and no longer being the girl he fell in love with, indicating this behavior is out of character for her.
This behavior suggests that when Tris endures a great loss, she in turn loses her will to live, though this is something she appears to overcome when she finally faces her own mortality in Insurgent. That being said, she is still somebody who is willing to sacrifice a great deal, including herself, in order to protect others, the only difference now is that after facing death, she wants to live, even when she knows there's a chance she may not. (It's worth noting that at her canon point, Tris has not faced her own mortality and therefore, she is likely to be more reckless in Teleios).
Scientifically speaking, when the Erudite ran tests on her, it is revealed that Tris is likely to have a flexible personality, allowing her to mimic the behavior of others, allowing her to fit in with different groups. This is a quality they believe is likely to be unique to the Divergent, and in turn suggests that Tris is able to more easily adapt to new situations than others might. We see her do this when she transfers to Dauntless and to a lesser extent, when she seeks refuge at both Amity and Candor headquarters. Tris seems to be able to bridge the gap between the different factions simply by being Divergent.
Trust is something else that does not come easily to Tris and though there are a number of canon examples to show why this might be so, it is something that has been there long before she experienced betrayal at the hands of some of her own faction and in the end, her own brother. She is suspicious by nature, never accepting anyone at their word but always considering why they might say such things.
In her every day interactions, Tris tends to have a sarcastic streak and is unafraid to speak her mind. Though this shouldn't be overly surprising, this does go against her upbringing, which is perhaps why it is seen as almost shocking when she does so. Though you wouldn't say that she is easy to anger, there are buttons that when pushed, will either result in verbal or physical altercations.
It could be argued that she has a low self esteem, though this is not something that is a dominant aspect of her personality. Her failure to see herself as anything other than plain is perhaps more a result of her Abnegation upbringing. As vanity is considered a selfish quality, she has been taught never to think much of her looks. In turn though, she does have trouble understanding how anyone can see her as appealing, even believing that Four (Tobias) is toying with her, rather than showing any real attraction towards her. She is however arrogant in other ways, even acknowledging this herself, but usually when it comes to a battle of wits or strong personalities as opposed to a comparison of looks.
Though it is never stated in Canon, it can be concluded that Tris is suffering from post-traumatic stress disorder. She has night terrors, waking up in cold sweats from reliving traumatic events. She appears to be frightened of guns, loud bangs (reminiscent of gun shots) and will not allow anyone to inject her with anything, insisting she must do it herself. She prefers there to be noise around her at all times, giving her something to focus on, especially when she's trying to go to sleep, something that does not come to her so easily these days.
There are a number of relationships that could warrant mention, but perhaps the most significant is with Four, aka Tobias Eaton. He is her trainer upon arrival to Dauntless and is one of the first to discover that she is Divergent due to her ability to manipulate the simulations she undergoes as part of her training. As a Divergent himself and somebody who transferred from Abnegation two years before, the two seem to be able to bond in ways that neither do with anyone else.
They embark on a romantic relationship and yet it is not one that has ever become physical. Tris loves Four in her own way, but she isn't sure that she completely trusts him, the two keeping things from each other as they both struggle to overcome their issues. These lies will continue to put a great strain on their relationship, especially since the death of Tris' parents and her change in personality as a result. At the end of Divergent she needs him, even wants him but also feels the weight of guilt from the things she has been forced to do.
The other significant relationship is with that of her brother Caleb, the only surviving member of her family. They have always been different, despite how close they are in age and Tris has often felt as though Caleb has judged her for her selfish nature. She was shocked when he chose to transfer from Abnegation to Erudite, but the two seemed to find a way to build on their relationships when he appeared to have left his faction in order to warn his family of the coming attacks.
It will be in the end, Caleb who teaches Tris the true meaning of betrayal. Towards the end of Insurgent, she discovers that he has remained loyal to Erudite all along, even serving his own sister up to be tortured, even though Erudite are responsible for the death of her parents but as it stands at the end of book 1, she believes him to be on her side and as the only family member she has left, will miss him perhaps even more than she misses Four.
Coming to Teleios at such a crucial time will not be something Tris adjusts to easily. She will believe that she has somehow been pulled into a simulation and it will take some convincing for her to realize that it's all in fact real. The next hurdle will be coming face to face with people that all - in her mind - seem to be Divergent. She'll be trying to mentally place them into factions and it will be a surprise to her that she can no longer reason out people's predicted actions purely based on their faction. Add to this the fact that Tris is suffering from PTSD? It will take time for her to be able to connect with her fellow indebted people. This is a girl who is broken, both mentally and physically but who has the ability to work through it and put herself back together.
Powers/Abilities: Tris is a competent fighter though her formal training in this area is limited at best. She can throw a punch, a knife and she knows how to fire a gun but hasn't been able to do so since the death of Will.
Appearance: Tris is relatively short, only 5ft2 and has little to no curves to speak of. If she had height on her side she might be considered willowy but being short as she is, she feels she looks more like a twelve year old. She doesn't consider herself pretty and in the traditional sense, she isn't. She has pale skin, blond hair, large blue eyes and a long nose, the kind of looks that when she wishes to, helps her blend into the background. A touch of eyeliner and a little effort taken with her appearance and she's has been described by some as stunning.
Being raised in the Abnegation faction, Tris has never been particularly comfortable showing a lot of skin. She tends to prefer baggy clothing, long sleeves and pants rather than skirts or anything that shows her (lack of) cleavage or arms. Having transferred to Dauntless she has adopted their preference for black (rather than the gray of Abnegation) and has learned that she doesn't need to tone down her appearance all the time, but still looks tame in comparison to her fellow Dauntless members.
Tris has three tattoos, all done while she was a Dauntless initiate. The first is three ravens on her collarbone, traveling towards her heart, one to signify each member of her family that she left behind. The second is the symbol for Dauntless, a circle with a fire in the center, on her left shoulder-blade to signify where she is now and the third, the symbol for Abnegation, a circle with a hand reaching to take another in the center, so she never forgets where she came from.
At her canon point, Tris is recovering from a recent gun shot wound to her right shoulder. As it heals it is expected that it will leave a scar.Unless it is healed by magical means.

Her skin is almost as pale as the white sheets, the only splash of color a dark red that seems to be seeping through the cloth and a tattoo of three ravens travelling towards her heart against the landscape of a bony collarbone.
She lifts the device so that she can stare into the camera, a slow almost defiant smirk beginning to pull at the corners of her mouth. She thinks she understands what is happening to her. She couldn't be more wrong.]
You'll have to do better than this Jeanine.
[An expectant look on her face that slowly begins to fade as the frail looking blond finds herself still in the room of the Palace.]
Jeanine... [Her breath quickens.] Jeanine!
[Panic is beginning to set in now as wild eyes begin to dart around the room, the blond scurrying back on the bed, the sheet falling away only enough to expose a recent and rather ghastly looking wound to her shoulder, blood tricking down her chest and staining the once pristine sheets.]
