CHARACTER
Name: Beatrice 'Tris' Prior
Canon: Divergent
Age: 15 (Canonically 16)
Demigod/Hunter/Satyr/Nymph: Demigod; Daughter of Jupiter, Roman god of Honor & Justice, Legacy of Salus, the Roman goddess of security and well-being by her Mother.
Demigod abilities: Common Demi-God Abilities &
Atmokinesis: The abilities to summon storms and clouds to attack foes.
Personality: To understand Tris, is to understand the setting in which she lives. In Veronica Roth's Dystopian vision of Chicago, society has been broken into factions in an attempt to rebuild after a great war has torn the world apart. Each faction is built on a belief system that tries to combat the very things they believe caused the destruction of society. Abnegation values selflessness, Dauntless values bravery, Erudite values knowledge, Amity values peace, whereas Candor values honesty.
At the age of sixteen, every person who lives in Chicago takes an aptitude test where they enter a simulation that leads them to the faction that best suits them. Most test results will show a clear path to the person who takes it and when they take the choosing ceremony, they often choose the faction they have been raised in. In some rare cases, transfers will occur, where a person will move from the faction of their family to another faction, thus leaving their families behind them. In the rarest of situations however, the test will be inconclusive, a person showing an inclination to more than one faction. This is known as Divergence.
Tris Prior, is Divergent.
Raised in Abnegation, Tris never felt as though she truly belonged there. She never considered herself to be selfless enough, even saying she was not "good enough" to remain in this faction. Her upbringing has however had a great impact on the person she is. She is far from vain, having rarely seen her reflection in a mirror and though she is always neat, she tends to dress down for all occasions, preferring to draw little attention to herself.
It is hard for her to come out of her shell at times and finds public displays of affection to be embarrassing, if not scandalous. It goes against her nature to have physical contact with others, be it hugs (as the people of Amity do) or even handshakes (as is the normal greeting in Dauntless.) Those in Abnegation did not believe in such things, which is perhaps why they have been dubbed "Stiffs" by the other factions.
Where she differs greatly from those of the faction she was raised, is her curiosity (a trait that is attributed to the Erudite) and most notably her bravery, the latter of which led her to transferring to Dauntless when it came time for her to choose.
It is when she transfers to Dauntless that the real Tris begins to emerge. No longer constrained by the values of Abnegation, we see a young woman who will rise to every challenge that is thrown at her, being the first jumper upon her arrival at the Dauntless compound, all because somebody suggests she's too much of a Stiff to belong there. She also shows here that she has the ability to reason out a problem rather than jump in blindly. It is this ability to be able to objectively look at a situation that enables her to be as brave as she is. Rather unlike her now fellow Dauntless, she does not often run blindly into danger. She can quietly weigh up the situation and make a decision based on that.
She has been accused of being somebody who will act first, think second and though this may appear to be true at times, the people that make these accusations do not understand the way a Divergent's mind works. Tris is always thinking, trusting her gut reaction most of the time but she does have the ability to logically work through a problem in order to gain the best result, as we see through Insurgent when she is able to predict the way that the Erudite faction will act.
She hates to show weakness, especially to her enemies though she has learned that sometimes in order to survive, it is best to make yourself appear a certain way in order to be protected, as she is forced to do after she was attacked and almost killed during her initiation. Most of the time however, Tris would rather pretend to be fearless than allow her opponent any satisfaction, as we see when she is captured by The Erudite in Insurgent. It is this bravery in the face of seeming hopelessness that suggests she truly does belong to Dauntless.
Tris finds forgiveness hard to come by, both when it comes to those who sin against her (when she refuses to forgive Al for his involvement in her initiation assault), and when it comes to the sins she herself commits. Despite the circumstances that surround the death of Will, being forced to kill him in order to survive is something that haunts her so greatly, she still has difficulty holding a gun let alone firing one. She blames herself for the sacrifice her parents made in order for her to live, almost as much, if not more than she blames Jeanine, leader of Erudite, who was responsible for the attacks that led to their deaths.
She believes in revenge, yet manages not to be bloodthirsty like many of her fellow Dauntless. Above all else, it appears that Tris not only wants to find the truth and seek justice (making Jupiter a fitting Father figure) but she wants to live her life in a way that honors her family and the many who have fallen since the fighting broke out. She will choose understanding and honor over murdering the woman deemed responsible for the slaughter of innocents as we see towards the end of Insurgent.
She has been shown to be at times reckless, though this is arguably not a trait that has always been with her, but instead something that emerged as a result of the events that occurred at the end of Divergent. Tris showed a carelessness for her own life, making decisions based less on reason and more on blind instinct. Four (Tobias) accuses her of changing and no longer being the girl he fell in love with, indicating this behavior is out of character for her.
This behavior suggests that when Tris endures a great loss, she in turn loses her will to live, though this is something she appears to overcome when she finally faces her own mortality in Insurgent. That being said, she is still somebody who is willing to sacrifice a great deal, including herself, in order to protect others, the only difference now is that she wants to live, even when she knows there's a chance she may not.
Scientifically speaking, when the Erudite ran tests on her, it is revealed that Tris is likely to have a flexible personality, allowing her to mimic the behavior of others, allowing her to fit in with different groups. This is a quality they believe is likely to be unique to the Divergent, and in turn suggests that Tris is able to more easily adapt to new situations than others might. We see her do this when she transfers to Dauntless and to a lesser extent, when she seeks refuge at both Amity and Candor headquarters. Tris seems to be able to bridge the gap between the different factions simply by being Divergent.
Trust is something else that does not come easily to Tris and though there are a number of canon examples to show why this might be so, it is something that has been there long before she experienced betrayal at the hands of some of her own faction and in the end, her own brother. She is suspicious by nature, never accepting anyone at their word but always considering why they might say such things.
In her every day interactions, Tris tends to have a sarcastic streak and is unafraid to speak her mind. Though this shouldn't be overly surprising, this does go against her upbringing, which is perhaps why it is seen as almost shocking when she does so. Though you wouldn't say that she is easy to anger, there are buttons that when pushed, will either result in verbal or physical altercations.
It could be argued that she has a low self esteem, though this is not something that is a dominant aspect of her personality. Her failure to see herself as anything other than plain is perhaps more a result of her Abnegation upbringing. As vanity is considered a selfish quality, she has been taught never to think much of her looks. In turn though, she does have trouble understanding how anyone can see her as appealing, even believing that Four (Tobias) is toying with her, rather than showing any real attraction towards her. She is however arrogant in other ways, even acknowledging this herself, but usually when it comes to a battle of wits or strong personalities as opposed to a comparison of looks.
Though it is never stated in Canon, it can be concluded that Tris is suffering from post-traumatic stress disorder. She has night terrors, waking up in cold sweats from reliving traumatic events. She appears to be frightened of guns, loud bangs (reminiscent of gun shots) and will not allow anyone to inject her with anything, insisting she must do it herself. She prefers there to be noise around her at all times, giving her something to focus on, especially when she's trying to go to sleep, something that does not come to her so easily these days.
AU History: I'm going to attempt to write the AU History to mirror Canon as much as possible which is why I've made some of the choices I have, such as why Tris is both a Legacy and a Demi-God; Her mother transferred from Dauntless to Abnegation, where she hid herself as Divergent. Tris, who is Divergent, left Abnegation to join Dauntless.
Raised in the rural farmland of Illinois, Beatrice Prior's life had been anything less than extraordinary from the moment that she was born. Her sheltered life of home-schooling and tending to the family's small farm never prepared her for the one that she would one day lead. She struggled with learning and yet her mother seemed to be endowed with endless patience, explaining to her daughter that her Dyslexia was something that ran in the family, though it would not be until her thirteenth birthday that her world as she knew it would be turned upside down and she would finally understand what that meant.
On the morning of her thirteenth birthday, what should have been a small, family celebration turned into a nightmare when a pack of hounds arrived on the Prior's small farm. Rather than mass panic, Natalie Prior seemed to know exactly what was happening and a very confused Tris watched as her mother dispatched of their attackers and with little more than a brief conversation, Tris' father left with her brother Caleb while Tris went with her mother.
The roadtrip came with limited stops along the way and though Tris pleaded with her Mom to explain what was happening, for most of the journey, Natalie Prior and her daughter travelled in silence. As they drew closer to New Rome however, Natalie began to tell her daughter what she needed to expect and finally, where they were going and why. At the gates of Camp Jupiter, Natalie Prior kissed her daughter farewell and Tris' life as she knew it would forever be changed.
For her very first test, in order to gain acceptance into the camp, Tris was told to blindly leap over the edge of a cliff. Though she was undoubtedly terrified and by no means had a death wish, she found bravery in the belief that had they really wanted her to die, they would have found a way to hide the camp from her completely. After what had happened back home, she saw it as a choice between certain death and possible death. At least the latter meant she had a chance.
Though Tris would pass her first test, the real one would come when she tried to adjust to life in Camp Jupiter. The training was unlike anything she'd ever experienced before. Taught by her parents never to raise her voice or hand in anger and unaccustomed to spending time with other children her own age, Tris struggled to find her place in the camp. She was marked as an outsider from the get go but the more people tried to put her down, the more she seemed to wake up inside, rising to the challenges even when it would end in the thirteen year old being beaten black and blue. She trained harder, was pushed by her trainers and slowly garnered a begrudging respect by a vast majority of the campers.
She found comfort in the routine of camp life, the militaristic schedule not all that different from the one she kept at home and though friends may have been scarce at first, Tris carved out a life for herself with a small yet close circle of friends who found amusement in introducing her to things she'd never before experienced back home.
Still, coming to the camp at thirteen meant she was older than many of the Probatio's and there were still a number of campers who saw Tris as an outsider, targeting her for a number of cruel pranks. She never once turned them in, even when said pranks came dangerously close to ridding Camp Jupiter of Tris once and for all. No matter how hard it got for Tris? She never once complained, never once cried and never once allowed her bullies to see her show weakness.
Like everyone who was present when Camp Jupiter fell, Tris remembers very little of what actually happened though there are some memories that cannot be erased and that is the loss of her mother. Still separated from her husband and son, Natalie Prior was in New Rome when everything came to an end, permitted back despite having been gone for fourteen years. Tris has no real memory of what caused it, but she does remember the sound of cracking wood, her mothers voice as she pushed her out of the way and the sight of blood that trickled from the corner of her mothers mouth as she lay pinned beneath a tree.
Her final act in life was to tell Tris where she could find her father and brother before making her promise to leave and not look back. Natalie Prior drew her last breath watching her daughter race off through the trees and to what she hoped would be the safety of her husbands arms.
It would take almost six weeks for Tris to find Andrew and Caleb Prior, arriving at a small, one bedroom apartment in Oregon with little life left in her. There was little time for a true reunion. Andrew Prior packed up their meagre belongings and his two surviving family members into a car and the three of them were again on the move. Where they ended up? The small town of Las Cruces, New Mexico.
In order to try and blend in, Caleb and Tris were sent to school while Andrew found a job working with a local Mechanic. Caleb adjusted far easier than his sister did. Scarred by the loss of her mother, Tris withdrew into herself and struggled to keep up with the mundane schoolwork set by her teachers. Her difficulty with reading and concentration saw her falling further and further behind and her trouble sleeping at night caused Tris to occasionally fall asleep in class, waking up screaming in the middle of a lesson. The family was whispered about behind closed doors and Andrew seemed to spend as much time at the school being informed of his daughters fights and attitude problems as he did at work.
Life never had a chance to return to normal, not for the broken family. After yet another meeting at the school, Tris and her father were returning to the car, Tris tuning out the lecture she'd heard from her father before when the now familiar sound of a dog growling made the blood in her veins turn to ice. Frozen with fear, Tris seemed to go into a trance, a silent scream lodged in her throat as one of the hounds lept straight at her father, grabbing him around the throat and spraying an arc of blood as they hit the ground. She was next and she knew it and after all that had happened? Tris didn't run, didn't prepare for a fight, she merely closed her eyes and waited for it to be over.
The end came, but not for Tris. While the hounds had tracked her down, Jason had been tracking the hounds. He made quick work of them, though nothing could be done to save Andrew Prior and if Tris didn't move and fast, nothing would be done to save her either. Jason explained Half Blood Hill to her and though she could have spoken up about needing to find her brother first, Tris chose to leave with Jason without so much as a word to Caleb. Blaming herself for the deaths of both her parents, Tris believed that Caleb would be better off thinking that she too was dead.
As it stands, Camp Jupiter fell before Tris could be placed into a Cohort. She fully expected that she would be placed in Fifth but was completely unaware that one of her trainers, Tobias Eaton had written a letter of support for her, along with several other campers that would have seen her higher placed.
The above has been approved by Kristi, Mun of Tobias Eaton
unstiff. If I'm misunderstanding when a person is placed in a Cohort (For example, if it happens as soon as they arrive in camp) then Tris would have been placed in the Fifth Cohort.

Being around people right now was both a blessing and a curse for Tris. On one hand she'd found that she could disappear in a crowd, that she didn't have to be that loner girl who people stared at or whispered about. The girl who fell asleep in class. The girl who must be crazy because she wakes up screaming.
It's only a blessing when people don't want to talk to her though. There's always one person who wants to hear what she'd been doing since Camp Jupiter fell and one in ten of those nosy types were incapable of reading body language. They could read a minor thunderstorm though.
The mop hit the ground with a slosh, the blonde who wielded it scowling at the waterlogged floor. Why couldn't the nosy types just wait for her to be outside before they peppered her with a hundred questions that were none of their damn business?!
